Instead of spending a surprising amount of money on a quick trip to Chicago, we decided to spend Labor Day weekend up north, splitting our time between Superior, WI and Duluth, MN. It worked in our favor that Bill hadn’t experienced many of the Duluth tourist attractions, i.e. Enger Tower, Split Rock Lighthouse, and Gooseberry Falls. Nor had he spent much time in Canal Park other than an occasional visit. Oddly enough, I had done these things, but I’ve never did much in Superior other than a short visit around Christmas to spend time with his family. It was a weekend of firsts for us.

Friday: The much dreaded drive up north on 35, Shamrock Pizza, Thirsty Pagan Brewery, and Builders Saloon. Highlight — Builder’s Saloon. Karaoke + cheap drinks + shotski = great night.

Saturday: Mickey waffles at the house, Enger tower, Northern Waters Smokehaus, Canal Park Brewery, late night Pizza Luce. Highlight — Bill’s first Northern Waters experience.

Sunday: Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, overlook on the highway, Castle Danger Brewery, Anchor Bar, bar games at Tavern Avenue Taproom. Highlight — While it’s hard to pick one, the jalapeno cream cheese burger at Anchor Bar was so unexpectedly great. It sounds weird, but holy shit does it taste good. Shout out: Split Rock Lighthouse. Those views.
